Review: We have already seen some virtual horse racing fun with Starters Orders 6, but Horse Racing 2016 (why not 2017?) brings a faster, more fun arcade style to it. The idea is simple. You pick a horse and jockey (6 of each to choose from) name the horse and jockey and start racing. No boring training section, no horse owning management game underneath it, this game is all about the thrill of horse racing and how amazing it feels to ride one.

From the starting gate you have to try and pair up the arrows to as close to the middle as possible to get a good start, then from the moment the horses jump from the starting block the game turns into a fast paced button basher that gives it an instant boost of excitement. Just mashing the “A” button and occasionally whipping the horse to make it go faster. Then now and again there will be hurdles you will have to jump the fences and even turn your horse around the corners. While there aren’t any multiplayer options there are 54 different events to take part in that are always one of 5 styles: Time Trial, Normal, Straight, Hurdles or Free Rider

I have to be honest and tell you I found Horse Racing 2016 to be a lot of fun! Sure it doesn’t have a lot of content and the graphics are nothing to write home about. But in VR horse racing feels a lot more exciting than simply watching it on TV. Yes a multiplayer system would have been nice, yes the game doesn’t look polished in any way and yes you will get bored of it very quickly. But for a few hours, you will be enjoying it and spurring your horse on like it was a grand national winner.
