Merge VR (Mobile VR Headset)

“…truly unique amongst a tidal wave of other headsets.”

Overall Packaging Presentation: When it comes to packaging the Merge is the most consumer friendly of the lot. It is designed to be displayed in a shop so it’s got lots of nice images and marketing text that leave someone reading it in no doubt what is inside the box. With a white box and a see-through cut-out corner, it looks amazing and would a fantastic gift for any VR enthusiast. The outer case box slides off to reveal a clear plastic case inside. Not much in the way of padding, but I suppose the Merge really doesn’t need it given it’s soft spongy body.

Whats in the box…

  • Instruction Booklet

First Impressions: Knowing that the Merge VR has been around for years now I can forgive it for feeling so heavy out of the box. Given its soft sponge style build, you would have thought it would have been a lot lighter than many of the plastic headsets, but this is simply not true. What is also surprising is how strong it feels. It might be slightly squishy to the grip, but it doesn’t feel too soft, like the perfect balance between soft and hard. It also feels well balanced and not too heavy on the head.

Features Review: The Merge VR headset is one big feature and that is because it has a soft rubber sponge-like body that means no face padding is needed because it already feels soft against the skin. It does have 2 screen touch buttons, 2 independently adjustable lens dials and a removable panel in the front so you can use it with AR apps.

Final Verdict: Still today the Merge VR is worth every penny and it truly unique amongst a tidal wave of other headsets. Yes it’s expensive, yes it can be tricky getting your phone in and out but the whole headset feels high quality and well made. They have put a lot of thought into the Merge VR and it shows. From the presentation to the overall design it looks and feels like a polished product. Sadly things have moved on the world of VR headsets since it launched and people might expect a lot more from such an expensive headset. But if it was your very first mobile VR headset you would be pleased as punch with it and you would instantly fall in love with the world of mobile VR. In short it’s good…very good! But it’s not perfect given its age. If the Merge 2 ever comes out I would be first in line to buy one.

Yeah, seems to be broken. You can always watch all the videos on YouTube anyway.
