Overall Packaging Presentation: The View Master VR (V1) is expertly marketed. Mattel have been marketing the original View Master for several decades now so they should. But this is marketed not as the next View Master, but as a whole new product. But if you think about it, they are not much different. Anyway, getting back to the presentation the box looks amazing and has all the information you would need to decide whether or not to buy it. Inside of that, the headset is displayed within a plastic housing all safe and sound. This is a shop friendly product and it looks great.

Whats in the box…

  • Headset
  • Demo AR Disc
  • Instruction Booklet
  • Smaller Phone Bar

First Impressions: It is clear from the moment you get it out of the box that this headset has been designed with children in mind. It’s big, rugged and looks like it could take quite a few knocks (I’m not sure your smartphone inside of it could handle it, but the headset certainly could.) It’s extremely well made and everything feels smooth and tightly made. This is no cheap headset design, it is clear Mattel have put a lot of time and effort into it.

Features Review: This is an area that the ViewMaster VR is lacking. But it does what it needs to do and to be fair it does it pretty well. While the lack of features will put someone off, this is designed to be your first mobile VR headset and if you didn’t know other headsets had various features like adjustable pupil and focus distance, you wouldn’t miss them!

Final Verdict: The original View-Master HMD system was introduced to the toy world in 1939 making it a truly retro system. While at the time it was considered to be a doorway into a virtual world times have changed a lot since then and people want a lot more from their virtual worlds than an image you had to hold up to the light in order to see it! And so from the ashes of an otherwise dormant brand becomes a smartphone mounted virtual reality headset that has given the View-Master a design make-over for the better. What a great way to carry on the View Master range.
