VIULUX V1 (PC Powered VR Headset)

“…it was comparable to a slightly blurry version of an Oculus CV1!”

Overall Packaging Presentation: When it comes to the box there really isn’t anything at all to read or see. Its nice blue blue colour and sturdy design are something I guess, but there is no mention of what that is inside or what to do with it. Opening the box things are a little better as its thick foam nest will be a welcome sight to those hoping it is well protected, which indeed it is. When it comes to its presentation the VIULUX V1 is more about practical use rather than visual, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Whats in the box…

  • Instruction Booklet
  • Headset
  • Branded Microfibre Cloth
  • Spare Lenses for Shortsightedness

First Impressions: I must say, in terms of design and build quality I found the VIULUX V1 to be much better than you would think it would be given its low price point. Its strong body and nice design is even complimented with some nice quality head straps and cool leather face padding! It really is so much better than I thought it would be and I can only hope its half as good to use as it looks. While it is indeed a little heavy I would have to say it is about the same weight wise as an Oculus DK2.

Features Review: When it comes to features this headset doesn’t have a lot of them. No pupil or focus adjustments and just one main button to turn it on. Also, the lack of setup instructions and its own software will make this headset hard to set up. But with just one HDMI lead out at least it is simple to plug in.

Final Verdict: The truth is I really didn’t expect much from this headset and at first, I thought I wasn’t going work with anything we tried. Then, as if by magic we download an old Oculus Runtime (0.8) and everything suddenly worked and to my surprise, it was so much better than I ever thought it would be. With a clear, bright display, slight blurring in fast movement and very little screen door effect, it was comparable to a slightly blurry version of an Oculus CV1! If you had plans to get an Oculus DK1 or DK2 I would make the suggestion that this could be the better version of them. Sure, it doesn’t have positional tracking, but for watching movies, 360 films or some Steam VR games its perfect! While it doesn’t seem to work with the current version of Oculus it is still impressively compatible with a load of steam VR games including Big Screen and the Steam Screen to play all your favourite Steam games on a giant screen! There really is a lot you can do with this headset and for its price, it’s a hidden gem that will surprise even the most hardened VR headset review like me.
