Cyberdrifter (Oculus Rift)
Intro: An AI program has gone rogue after becoming fully self-aware and highly intelligent. Enter the Cyberdrifter’s, military trained computer specialists capable of entering systems virtually and taking back control.
Take on your role as a “Cyberdrifter” and prepare to do battle in a virtual world against the rogue AI and regain full system control.
Review: Cyberdrifter is a game that is clearly based on several 80’s movies. From The Terminator with its “AI program has gone rogue and became fully self-aware” and its Tron style looks. The idea is pretty simple, go into AI’s program and destroy it within. You do that because you are playing the role of a “Cyberdrifter” who can hack into it and take down the system by shooting the various viruses and program codes within the game (that all come in the shake of various robots).
While the storyline is a lot better than your average VR shooter, the gameplay style is pretty much the same as them. Just aim, shoot and duck (no bullets here, just shoot until you die). I will say the levels are well laid out and there is always a good opportunity to duck behind something to catch your breath and you will need it thanks to the fast-paced action of the game.
Verdict: The wireframe/Tron style of graphics won’t be for everyone, but I personally thought it look OK and some of the room designs were well thought out. Sadly I wasn’t a big fan of the odd control system neither and it is clear that it’s been made for the Vive rather than the Rift because of the unusual way you hold the guns which feels very unnatural with the Oculus Touch controllers.
While ridiculously short in gameplay time for the asking price I still had a blast playing Cyberdrifter, the good news is there are apparently more levels on the way for this game and if that is true it could easily turn into a game that will be well worthy download. MBut for now maybe it is just best to wait a while until an update comes, or just simply grab it in a sale.
