The Jurassic World: Apatosaurus VR Experience allows the viewer for the first time to see what it feels like to be in the presence and the close proximity of a living dinosaur and to experience a sense of connection with it with the mixture of awe, striking beauty and danger that this implies.
What is it?
If there ever was a VR app that embodies the term “imagine” perfectly, this is it. Just imagine being right close to a huge dinosaur. And I mean close. Like seeing the ticks on his scaly skin close. This is no active shooter nor does it have any practical use. It is one of my favourite apps though to introduce my friends to VR. It never fails to wow the audience.
Not much is happening in this app, but the little that is, is awe inspiring. You’ll feel like you were dropped right into a North American jungle during the late Jurassic period. Right in front of you is one of the biggest animals that ever wandered the earth, fast asleep. You feel like you have to be really quiet in order to not wake up this magnificent end product of dinosaur engineering. It will eventually wake up though, no matter if you hold your breath or not and then the real fun begins.
What is it like?
Whoever created the graphics in this app deserves an Oscar. Apart from the stunning vegetation (and of course this monster of a sauropod) there are loads of extras to discover. A Jeep, walkie-talkie and a flask among them. Just look around a bit and enjoy the scenery while you still can. The peace and quiet won’t last long. If you ever wanted to see your 80 year old grandmother go “Ah” and “Oh” and “Squeak”, put some Samsung Gear VR on her and launch Jurassic World: Apatosaurus VR. But make sure you’ve planted her on a safe chair first.
The dinosaur will finally wake up and now it’ll get really interesting. The 3D effect is stunning. Together with the amazing graphics and audio it creates a feeling of immersion that I haven’t found in many apps yet. The apatosaurus will come from far away to veeery close and you almost feel its breath on your face. Grandma will probably make a jump backwards, so make sure you’re ready to catch her. You should also have a video camera ready to film her reaction. That video will be the hit on countless family gatherings. The dinosaur will eventually go back to sleep, but until then this going to be a hell of a ride.
How easy is it to use?
Since you’re not really doing anything it couldn’t be any easier. Make sure you’ve adjusted the focus on your Gear VR perfectly to the eyesight of the person you’re showing this to. The better you do that the better the 3D effect is going to be. Just launch the app and let the show begin. I usually tell my victims to look around a bit before the dinosaur wakes up. Watching the senery they often let down their guard which makes the apatosaurus waking up more of a surprise.
If you want to show off your sparkling new Samsung Gear VR to friends and family, this is the app to do it with. Not much to do, but it really shows off the visual effects and immersion one experiences with VR.
