Intro: Virtual Desktop is an application developed for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that lets you use your computer in VR. You can browse the web, watch movies or even play games on a giant virtual screen.
Review: Virtual Desktop is basically a tool that puts your Windows environment into your VR on a giant virtual screen. With full 360 video playback, multi-screen support and launchers with full voice commands it is supposed to be a fully interactive VR environment for your desktop needs. You can configure the screen size and VR location, choose a flat or curved screen and even blend your desktop background with the environment.
The idea is that watching 2D movies or playing 2D games on a flat screen can seem a little old skool. With this app, you get to watch and play those things all from the comfort of your VR headset.
Verdict: The problem I have with this software is that there is so much better out there. While it isn’t exactly the same thing as Bigscreen Beta, that program shows what is possible with the VR desktop environment, but this is sadly lacking a lot of features that Bigscreen Beta has. Having said that, Virtual Desktop is a smoother experience and navigating around your VR desktop is easy and intuitive. I also have to give Kudos to the developers who are always happy to listen to suggestions and feedback, making it more about what you want to see added / improved on this app rather than themselves. At the end of the day, this is a handy app that can only get better in time.
