Review: Believe it or not, the Serious Sam games have been going since 2001 and now 16 years later (at the time of this review) we are taking a look at Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. You play the role of a cadet playing a VR simulation of Sam Stone’s own log file. Sam Stone is the captain of the Saratoga Battlecruiser and he is the legend who is Serious Sam. This storyline here is pretty thin as it is with most Serious Sam games. You must defend an archaeologist who is looking for some tablets inside a temple. But you won’t be helping him find them, you are charged with the job of fighting off wave after wave of enemies.

Ths game is classic Serious Sam, just mindless shooting with badass guns. Shoot and destroy the biggest of monsters as they try and stop you. With 3 worlds, several missions on each, loads of weapons and 20 different enemy types, some classic and some brand new there is more than enough to keep most Serious Sam fans happy here. I have to say the game looks pretty awesome with gore overload and some pretty awesome looking guns and areas. This is the classic game, only played in VR. It’s super gory fun and no thinking needed (or any movement, just stand where you are and shoot).

There is nothing really innovative about Serious Sam VR but there doesn’t need to be. You buy these games for a bit of mindless violence fun, not for revolutionary gameplay mechanics. It’s always been about shooting, killing, then shooting some more and in that respect, it stays true to its origins. While at first, this game didn’t offer a great deal of value for money. With the new Shaanti update it’s a good solid addition with loads of new guns that does offer a little bit more replay value.

All in all Serious Sam VR is an unfinished game that is growing and changing all the time. While it won’t be for everyone’s tastes and even die-hard fans like myself will struggle to enjoy it, it’s still got that classic fun shooter style and with the touch controllers, it feels amazing to play it. This isn’t the best Serious Sam game by any means, but it’s still fun. Maybe wait for a sale on this one then give it a go. Failing that wait till it updates with more features then download it. Either way, you will have a blast playing it.
